Factorio

The factory-building game that has swallowed entire months of its players' lives. Automate everything, optimize constantly, and launch a rocket — then start again with a bigger, better factory.

Factorio is one of the highest-rated games ever made on Steam, and for good reason. You crash-land on an alien planet and must build a factory complex capable of launching a rocket — using every resource the planet offers. What starts as hand-crafting iron plates becomes a vast automated supply chain with thousands of machines working in concert.

The design loop is addictive: automate a process, discover a bottleneck, solve the bottleneck, create two new bottlenecks in the process. As your factory grows, so does the alien threat — bugs that attack your walls in ever-larger swarms, forcing you to build defenses and expand aggressively.

The game respects your intelligence completely. There are no tutorials that hold your hand past the basics. The wiki is a secondary game in itself.

Multiplayer lets you build enormous factories with friends, which is an entirely different — and incredible — experience.

Why PixelPick recommends it: Warning: Factorio has destroyed the sleep schedules of engineers, programmers, and normal humans alike. You’ve been warned.
