ConcernedApe (one person) spent four years building Stardew Valley in his spare time, releasing it at $15, and fundamentally changed what indie games could be. The pitch is simple: inherit a farm, grow crops, meet townsfolk, explore mines. The execution is exceptional.

What makes Stardew last is how it respects your time while still giving you plenty to do. You set the pace. Want to focus on optimizing your farm layout? Go for it. Want to romance every villager? There’s a whole storyline for each. Want to fight monsters in a mine system that goes 120 floors deep? That’s there too.

The multiplayer co-op update turned it into one of the best games to play with a partner or friends. Up to four players can share a farm, and the game scales naturally.

Why PixelPick recommends it: Even if farming games aren’t your thing, Stardew Valley deserves your attention. It’s the rare game that’s genuinely relaxing without being boring.
