Portal 2

The gold standard of puzzle game design. Portal 2 teaches you its mechanics through brilliant level construction, makes you feel like a genius, and tells a genuinely funny story while doing it.

Portal 2 is a masterclass in game design. Valve’s puzzle-platformer introduces the portal gun — a device that creates linked portals on flat surfaces — and then spends eight hours finding every clever thing you can do with it. Momentum, gel physics, light bridges, laser redirection: each mechanic is introduced slowly, mastered naturally, then combined in ways that produce genuine “oh, THAT’S how” moments.

The single-player campaign features some of the best writing in games. GLaDOS is one of gaming’s great villains (and antiheroes). Stephen Merchant’s performance as Wheatley is genuinely hilarious. The dialogue is sharp throughout.

The co-op campaign adds a whole second layer: two sets of portals, two players who must coordinate their thinking, and puzzles designed to make communication essential.

At this point, Portal 2 regularly goes on sale for under $5 on Steam. There is no excuse to not own it.

Why PixelPick recommends it: The rare game that teaches you to think differently. A classic that holds up completely.
