Return of the Obra Dinn
A 1-bit insurance mystery set aboard a ghost ship. You have a magic pocket watch, 60 dead sailors, and no guidance. Figure out how each crew member died — and who is responsible.
Lucas Pope (Papers, Please) created something that doesn’t exist anywhere else. The Obra Dinn is a merchant vessel that disappeared five years ago and has now returned — with no living crew and no obvious explanation. Your job as an insurance adjuster is to account for all 60 passengers and crew.
The pocket watch lets you enter the final moments of each death — frozen tableaux of violence, monster attacks, storms, and crimes. The game gives you an enormous amount of information and asks you to deduce the rest. When you correctly identify three fates simultaneously, the game confirms it and lets you move on.
The visual style — 1-bit dithered monochrome like an early Macintosh — is distinctive and functional. The music, composed by Pope himself, is excellent.
Why PixelPick recommends it: The most original puzzle game in years. It trusts you to be smart, and the satisfaction of cracking it is enormous.
