Slay the Spire

The deck-builder that launched a genre. Climb a procedurally generated tower, build a card deck, fight monsters, and make strategic decisions that compound in fascinating ways.

Slay the Spire didn’t invent the deck-building genre, but it defined what a deck-builder video game should be — and every game that followed owes it an enormous debt. The formula: pick a character, climb a branching map, fight monsters using cards you draft along the way, and try to defeat a final boss before your build falls apart.

The three playable characters (four with the Watcher) each feel genuinely different. The Silent uses poison and shivs. The Ironclad bleeds health to fuel powerful strikes. The Defect manages orbs that produce energy, lightning, and frost. The Watcher enters divine or wrath stance, doubling damage in ways that feel electric when they work.

Each run takes 90 minutes to two hours. You’ll play hundreds of them.

Why PixelPick recommends it: One of the most replayable games ever made. Available everywhere, cheap, and genuinely difficult to put down.
